Riesling
Palliser Riesling is one of Martinborough's best kept white wine secrets and has texture and depth from 10% of the grapes being fermented in oak, with the balance in stainless steel and a finished residual sugar of 13.5 grams, which means this wine is medium dry - but it tastes crisp, citrusy and has great length. The finish is fresh and dry.
Grapes in this wine come from Om Santi Vineyard (51%), with the balance split between Pinnacles and Palliser Vineyards.
In conversion to organic certification.
Dry, full bodied, iconoclastic Riesling from New Zealand's king of spatlese styles, Mat Donaldson and his winemaking team at Pegasus Bay Winery, which is New Zealand's greatest Riesling producer.
This wine, Bel Canto, is the queen of the winery's Riesling range. It is bone dry with 5 grams per litre of residual sugar due to high brix (grape sugars) at harvest time and a small percentage of noble rot (also known as botrytis). It drinks well now and can age for the long term; up to and beyond 10 years.
Extended hang time on the vines has resulted in the intensely ripe, tropical fruit flavours in the grapes which were picked to retain refreshing, high but balanced acidity. The free run juice was fermented slowly at cool temperatures to retain fruit characters and varietal purity. Alcoholic fermentation was left to continue until residual sugar of 5 g/l was achieved. Retention of a little of natural carbon dioxide gives spritz character to add liveliness and accentuate freshness.
Mat Donaldson and his talented winemaking team create this fabulous Riesling, which is modelled on the best full bodied wines from both Germany and Austria. It is made from grapes given a long hang time on the vines and is, consistently, one of New Zealand's greatest white wines every year, thanks to winemaker Mat Donaldson and his talented team of Riesling devotees at Pegasus Bay Winery in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. It is succulent, medium dry, concentrated and rich in taste with a honeyed texture and and notes of lemongrass, lemon zest and ripe mandarins leading into a full bodied, weighty, off dry white with high but balanced acidity providing a long finish.
* This wine may form a natural sediment over time due to the winery's minimal handling philosophy. It has been cold stabilised by the winemaking team at Pegasus Bay.
Peregrine's quest for outstanding Central Otago wine begins in the three distinct sub-regions from which we draw our fruit: Bendigo, Pisa and Gibbston, where their landmark winery rises up amongst rugged rock reefs and ancient hills. In each of these locations, their commitment to organic farming and viticulture guarantees fruit of the highest quality, imparting the clearest expression of character to every vintage.
Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling 2015 is a classic example of dry Eden Valley Riesling, showing the flavours we see so consistently each year from this wonderful single vineyard. This wine shows intense aromas of talcum and lemon lime fruit, with a fine floral perfume overlaying dried herb. The palate shows great length and depth with limes, white flowers and fresh rosemary. The wine finishes with a fresh natural acidity, which balances the flavour intensity, and a minerality that will reward medium to long-term cellaring.
One of the best dry Rieslings made in New Zealand every year with flinty, fresh citrus aromas and the ability to age superbly for up to a decade in cool dark storage conditions. Or drink now, paired with goat's cheese or fresh Thai flavours.
The name Jeunesse is the French word for youth, a reference to the age of the vines used to make this wine.
This is an excellent quality dry Central Otago Riesling.
"Beautiful clarity of aromas in the grapefruit and lime-peel zone. Then abundant stony, flinty, wet rock complexity. Immensely fresh palate, this is full of life and has a very long, seamless run to a dry, flavorsome finish. Drink or hold. *Top 100 New Zealand Wines of 2018*" (10/2018)
96 points James Suckling.
Hand picked grapes go into this smooth, dry and way too drinkable Riesling made from dry grown vines on low yielding vineyard sites in the elevated Eden Valley.
This Riesling is beautifully integrated as a youthful wine, drinking well without acid dominating and it has the complexity, palate weight and structure that will reward further aging.
This is a gift for the Riesling lover in your life.
Rockford Wines' legacy
Rockford Wines is an icon itself and a relatively new one, established in 1971 by Robert O'Callaghan, who has forged a reputation for preserving winemaking tradition and saving many of the world's oldest grape vines from being pulled up in the Australian Government's vine pull schemes of the 1970s and 1980s.
The Rockford vintage shed houses equipment from 50 to 100 years ago, which was discarded by other wineries as modernisation took over.
Seresin Estate's Momento Riesling offers exceptional value for money and a super succulent, off dry style with nicely balanced acidity making this wine taste fresh and long on flavour. Its aromas are of lime, Granny Smith apples, ripe peach and a touch of honey but this is a wine to drink with savoury food - it matches brilliantly with Thai curries and fresh herbs. Did we mention that it's also stunning value for money.
Organic certification
The organic story at Seresin
One of the greatest things about Seresin Estate is the organic certification. This came relatively early on for Seresin, who was dismayed by the amount used and the impacts of man made chemicals, which were routinely and frequently sprayed on vines. His early adopting philosophy of organic certification paved a positive path for the integrity of the wines as well as leading others to follow suit.
Marlborough is white wine country and while it's mostly all about Sauvignon and Chardonnay, this spectacular new dry-ish Riesling is full of deliciously zingy flavours of lemon zest, fresh apples and ripe peach, coupled with an intensely lingering, flavoursome finish.
This wine is intensely aromatic on the palate and has lingering flavours with a crisp dry finish.
The north facing Ashmore Vineyard receives all day sun and that, coupled with cool Marlborough nights, makes for ideal cool climate growing conditions for the Riesling grapes that are grown on the free draining, deep alluvial silt, overlying clay sub soils. Ashmore Vineyard was planted in 1997 with conversion to organics beginning in 2009 and full certification from Bio-Gro in 2012.
A deliciously dry Riesling with funky interesting savoury flavours derived from the grapes spending time on skins, which provides fleshy, citrusy flavours. Winemaker Kairanga winemaker John Kavanagh has softened the naturally high acidity in this great white by giving the grapes time on their skins, prior to fermentation.
A beautiful new take on the Riesling theme, which will appeal as much to all white wine lovers as it does to Riesling purists and those who love new wave skin contact dry whites.
Only 273 bottles of this succulent, lively and sensationally delicious Te Kano Riesling were made in 2021 and all the grapes were grown on the winery's Northburn vineyard.
This wine is juicy and succulent in flavour with great complexity of lime zest, green apples and green herb notes, all beautifully balanced by a high but refreshingly pure 57 grams of residual sugar. The wine is made from grapes grown on the rockiest highest point at the winery’s Northburn Vineyard where pure fresh lime and green apple flavours are dialled up and fleshed out with rich apricot aromas and notes of lemon on the wine’s lingering bright finish.
North Canterbury is the heart and soul of New Zealand's greatest Rieslings, including this aptly named classic from Terrace Edge - it's made from grapes grown on a vineyard along the edge of the Waipara River.
This wine is a full bodied, medium dry Riesling with ripe citrus, peach and honey flavours. It's made from hand-picked grapes and is fermented to a near-dry style while retaining richness from the residual sugar, which is balanced by Riesling's naturally high acidity.
This wine is certified organic.
* Terrace Edge was named the New Zealand Organic Vineyard of the Year in 2018 and this year was named Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Winery of the Year.
