Tom is Church Road?s most premium range of wines. This Syrah is made from incredible quality fruit from the Hawke?s Bay. The nose is rich, ripe and fragrant. Layers of dark berry and cherry fruit are supported by lifted violet perfume, warm exotic spice and notes of dusty cacao, vanilla, smoky charcuterie with a subtle underlying earthiness. On the palate, the wine is both luxurious and elegant with a plush texture supported by silky tannins, lending great length to the finish.
Hot, dry, long and reliable. And that's just the vintage conditions in Hawke's Bay in 2020. This wine is a beautiful expression of a warm vintage with a long summer. Flavours here include blackberry, spice and liquorice which combine to produce a fruit dominant but complex wine. A small inclusion of the white variety Viognier gives the wine beautiful perfume and allows the wine more accessibility while young.
A big red with a big following thanks to its dense dark and impressive ripe black plummy flavours intermingled with spice in a deliciously full bodied, complex red wine from Waiheke Island's biggest wine producer.
The grapes in this wine come from six vineyards on the island. They are called Asylum, Big North, Garden Cove, Mad Mans, Niko Face and North 3; all small sites planted on extremely steep hillsides on a remote and beautiful corner of Waiheke Island. Each little vineyard was originally planted as an experiment to see how well grapes would fare here. The results speak for themselves; Man O' War Dreadnought Syrah is a commanding and powerful red from one of the warmest climates in New Zealand. It was fermented in French oak, 32% new and 68% seasoned and is named after the first in a line of early 20th Century battleships which was named Dreadnought.
Terrace Edge is a family owned, certified organic winery based in the Waipara Valley wine growing region. This Syrah has a nose of ripe blackberry and plum with notes of liquorice and spice. The palate is rich with dark fruit, supported by elegant ripe tannins.
Terrace Edge was named the New Zealand Organic Vineyard of the Year in 2018 and this year was named Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Winery of the Year.
Undressed is a sulphur free, organic Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels growing region in the Hawke?s Bay. The nose offers dense black fruit with hints of pepper and sweet spice. The palate has black fruit and mocha flavours with gentle spice notes. It has a smooth finish and soft tannins. Suitable for vegans and preservative free.
Craggy Range chief winemaker Julian Grounds uses an old heritage clone of Syrah to make this full bodied, deeply coloured red with its spicy flavours and fresh fruit forward style. Syrah is the second most planted red grape in Hawke?s Bay after Merlot and 70% of the grapes in this wine were hand harvested, 18% whole bunch fermented with the remaining 82% destemmed. They were all fermented with indigenous yeasts and the wine was aged in French oak, 25% new, for 14 months.
The result is one of our best value and best tasting local Syrahs under $30. An extraordinary wine for the price.
We love it and think it represents outstanding value for money.
Try it.

Fromm Vineyard Syrah is grown solely at Fromm?s Home Vineyard in the Wairau Valley, which is certified organic with BioGro NZ.
This is an intensely flavoursome Syrah with dark, delicious black fruit flavours and complex earthy notes of cedar, toasted spice and notes of oak. Winemaker Hatsch Kalberer blends three per cent of the white grape, Viognier, into this full bodied wine, to add depth and fleshy appeal. He suggests this wine has at least five years? of aging potential up its sleeve so it can be enjoyed now and cellared. Buy two bottles to do both.
Stonecroft?s Reserve Syrah is their flagship wine, and is made using some of the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. The nose is complex and fruit-forward with notes of dark red fruit, sweet spice and vanilla. The palate is dark and rich, with sweet spice notes and a hint of chocolate. Fine grained tannins meet balanced acidity and a long finish.
Spicy Syrah with complex notes of cloves, black pepper and a note of cedar. This is a lovely medium bodied red made with grapes grown on the Woodthorpe Terraces and Bridge Pa Triangle. Grapes were all destemmed for fermentation and given extended maceration on skins before pressing into a combination of new and seasoned French oak for five months? maturation. The wine was fined with egg whites before bottling and is dry, spicy and medium bodied.
Te Mata Estate is one of the pioneers of Syrah in New Zealand and one of Hawke's Bay's longest continually running wineries.
Elephant Hill Syrah is made from grapes grown on two vineyards, at the winery's home block at Te Awanga and on the Gimblett Gravels, inland from the coast. It is a co ferment of 99% Syrah with 1% Viognier; a classic northern Rhone winemaking method, which provides wines with pronounced dark fruit flavours, fleshy texture and spicy notes.
