From Quartz Reef?s Bendigo Estate vineyard which is BioGro certified organic and Demeter certified biodynamic. Deep ruby-red in colour exhibiting spiced wild berries. Opulent and rich on the palate with notes of dark cherry, blackberry and liquorice. Silky tannins with a muscular structure and impressive length.
Sensational certified organic Marlborough Pinot Noir with dark fruit flavours, elegant structure and a spicy style. All grapes in this wine were hand picked and 20% were whole bunch fermented in large French oak with no crushing. Light extraction is the aim, says winemaker Damien Yvon, who gave the wine less than three weeks of total post ferment maceration time. The finished wine was then aged for 12 months in French oak, 20% of which was new ? a relatively modest amount, which allows the fruit to be hero in this wine. It is a beautifully refined, silky and elegant Pinot Noir.
Clos Henri began 22 years ago in Marlborough when the French Bourgeois family expanded their winemaking from the heart of Sancerre in the tiny village of Chavignol to Blenheim, in 2001. Now that their vines are 22 years of age , the family feels that they are only now starting to reflect and express the taste of the land. This family retains their land and winemaking in Chavignol where they have made wine for 11 generations.
Dark, earthy and delicious with a smooth body and structure to burn. This is an impressive Pinot Noir made by the Bourgeois family, who originate in Sancerre in the Loire Valley, France but luckily for us, they wanted to break out of their comfort zone, so they bought a property in Marlborough in 1999 and the rest is history, which is still in the making, thanks to impressive wines such as this mid tier, 100% certified organic Pinot Noir. It?s made entirely from grapes grown on the winery?s site. No grapes are bought in. There is no fining in any of the wines so all are vegan friendly. The Clos Henri winemaking team want the wines to speak about the place so they focus on low intervention.
Biodynamic Pinot Noir from the Pisa Range in Central Otago. This is Burgundy meets Otago in style, with dark cherries and herbal spice notes on the nose and a medium palate of further dark cherries, licorice spice and nutty oak elements. Acid, tannins and fruit all in balance and delivered in a lush velvet mouthful.
Pair with duck, pork beef and lamb over the next four years.
A portion of the proceeds of each bottle of smooth and spicy Crimson Pinot Noir goes towards Project Crimson; a native tree replanting project nationwide in New Zealand, which the Ata Rangi winery is involved in today.
This wine is dry, medium bodied and fruit-led with red and dark fruit flavours leading into toasted spice notes and a lingering finish. It's one of Martinborough's great gateway Pinot Noirs.
The name Ata Rangi is Maori for dawn sky and was chosen to portray the new beginning that the start of this winery represented for founder Clive Paton in the late 1970s.
Palliser Estate Pinot Noir is one of our favourites here at Regional, made with hand picked grapes grown on three vineyards in Martinborough - Hua Nui, home block and Pencarrow. Flavours of red fruit, smoky oak, a velvet texture and full body all make this incredibly elegant wine a keeper for up to five years. It also drinks beautifully now with its smooth texture and freshness.
The grapes were given 5% whole bunch fermentation which adds structure, which is accentuated by French oak aging for 10 months.
Bottled in March 2023.
What the critics say
"Silky, smooth and powerfully elegant Pinot Noir from Palliser Estate."
Joelle Thomson, wine writer and wine programme director for Regional Wines
This silky, elegant Pinot from Chard Farm is made with from vineyards in Lowburn and Parkburn where the soils are a mixture of alluvial schist. All grapes in this wine were hand picked and fermented in small lots.
A delicious Pinot with a seductively elegant power and youthful, fresh and refreshing style.
This is Palliser Estate in Martinborough and is a lovely expression of Pinot Noir from this small but exceptionally high quality wine region.
Savoury earthy textures combine with red berry fruit flavours, which meld beautifully with supple tannins and a long, fresh finish. It drinks beautifully and is also a delicious match with duck and pork.
Founder Dave Clouston and winemaker Sanna Stander are the driving force behind Black Cottage producing wines with fruit from Central Otago
This Otago Pinot Noir is purple-red in colour, with a nose of lifted christmas cake and glazed cherry, overlaid on violets and spice. The palate is full of dark fruit flavours that fade to savoury notes. Soft acidity and round tannins contribute to a glossy mouth feel and a smooth finish. This wine will improve for several years with careful cellaring.
This wine is one of the country's best Pinot Noirs, having won an extremely long string of awards and accolades over the decades, which both winemakers, Clive Paton and Helen Masters, attribute to, among other things, 40% of the wine being made from the Abel clone of Pinot Noir. This clone was famously (true story) brought in via a gumboot from a grand cru vineyard in Burgundy, France; the traditional classic home to the Pinot grape.
Abel brings structure and intensity to Pinot Noir, as does the climate in the Wairarapa, which heavily reduces potential yields at flowering time in spring, resulting in smaller bunch architecture and more intense flavours as a direct result.
This wine drinks well now and undoubtedly has a long life ahead for those with wine cellars - and willpower.
A New Zealand classic - for good reason.
The name Ata Rangi is Maori for dawn sky and was chosen to portray the new beginning that the start of this winery represented for founder Clive Paton in the late 1970s.
Ripe hand picked fruit, gentle winemaking and maturation in French oak have resulted in a complex and powerful wine, with aromas of red berry fruits and violets, a rich and silky smooth palate and a long spicy finish. Excellent value, drinking fantastically well now and will develop and cellar for several years.
Fabulous Pinot Noir with amazing depth of flavour especially at this price; a wine that really puts Marlborough's best foot forward thanks to winemaker Rebecca Salmond, who sources grapes from the region's Southern Valleys. Flavours are of ripe cherry, blackberry and spice lead into a lovely, elegant yet weighty palate with superb fruit ripeness and intensity. This wine will continue to age for two years plus and pairs well with lighter red meat dishes.
