Syrah
Mills Reef Winery is based in Tauranga and makes its stellar wines from grapes grown in New Zealand's two biggest wine regions; Marlborough and Hawke's Bay, respectively.
This dry full bodied and spicy Syrah is made from grapes grown in Hawke's Bay where the warm climate adds weight, spice and ripe fruit flavours. Great drinking and excellent value for money for enjoying now or in the next four to five years.
Volumes are limited so get in fast to secure some Clos de Ste Anne Syrah, which is quite possibly the best red wine made in Gisborne each year with its silky elegance and subtle notes of spice, both highlighting the greatness of Syrah while retaining superb balance. This is an excellent vintage and rates as the best we've tasted in the past decade.
This wine is certified organic and biodynamic.
The 2020 vintage was superlative and is the first year since 2014 in which all five wines made from the Clos de Ste Anne vineyard have been produced.
Barrel fermented Syrah with ripe black fleshy plum flavours, hints of baking spice (notes of cinnamon, ginger and cardamon) and a long, structured but smooth finish with ripe tannins and dry flavours. This wine is the jewel in Mission Estate's Syrah crown and is made from 100% Gimblett Gravels grapes.
This beautifully fragrant Syrah is a dry, full bodied wine with notes of spice and complexity, offering very good value for money. It's made with grapes from the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District in Hawke?s Bay and displays blackberry, dark plum and toasted nut characters with subtle black pepper and floral aromas.
A top wine for the price and a lovely expression of Hawke's Bay Syrah.
Huchet Syrah is a deeply coloured red wine with dark plum fruit flavours held in a highly structured, full bodied dry style with spicy complexity and a long finish. It's named after Brother Cyprian Huchet, the son of a French winemaker from the Loire Valley who was one of the first winemakers in New Zealand when he worked at Mission Estate in 1871.
This wine is made in very limited volumes from top quality vintages only.
Matt Dicey, Winemaker notes:
?Vibrant aromas of black pepper, liquorice and floral notes on the nose. With a dense and savoury tinged mid-palate with sandalwood and cedar notes drawing the wine together. Cassis flavours flow through the fine acidity driving through a long finish.?
Winery notes:
Our Ghost Town Syrah is one of the few Syrah?s you?ll find from a region so famous for Pinot Noir. Handcrafted in limited quantities from our Bendigo Vineyard in Central Otago, planted in 2001 at a higher altitude. Together with Bendigo vineyard?s unique personality and minimal winemaking intervention, this Syrah displays fine texture and suppleness. We expect this wine to evolve with careful cellaring for a further 10-15 years.
Great ripe, juicy new Hawke's Bay Syrah from maverick winemaker Rod McDonald, whose love affair with Syrah shows in this full bodied red made from a mix of French clones and was made traditionally with the grapes going through a cold soak to extract colour before natural fermentation kicked off eventually building up to a strong, hot ferment.
McDonald describes this wine as having beautiful, lifted floral notes and a lovely punchy mouthful of fruit and earth. Bright and vibrant with aromas of raspberries, violets and nutmeg. Silky with great balance and a fine structure.
One of our favourite wine importers created this tasty, dry, full bodied red from Hawke?s Bay Syrah with the help of talented winemakers. This is a spicy, deep purple, juicy take on the second most planted red in the Bay; Syrah. This wine drinks well now and can age further; try cellaring a couple of bottles for at least five to six years.
This is a beautifully balanced wine that offers aromas of cherry, dark plum and fragrant plum blossom on the nose. The palate is velvet textured with flavours of blackberry, plum, complex spice and white pepper, balanced by fine grained tannins, and a hint of smoky oak.
Food matches include wild pork, red meats and game dishes.
Beautiful Syrah for drinking tonight or cellaring for another five+ years; silky, elegant and complex spice, black pepper and wild berry aromas all combine in a full bodied wine that has a history of ageing,. This wine is impressively made entirely from hand picked grapes grown on hillside vineyards planted in a mix of different Syrah clones, which accentuates its complexity and elegance.
An elegant Syrah from Hawke's Bay winemaker Kate Radburnd, whose extensive experience of making Syrah brings out the best in this exotic spicy French grape variety. Red fruit aromas are supported here by a velvet smooth backbone of fine tannins. Pure fruited and fragrant, with blueberry and cardamon spice. This Syrah has lingering length and persistence of flavour, a hallmark of this variety.
This delicious, dark and juicy new release is made from hand harvested Syrah grapes, which were destemmed and fermented in open tops with some foot stomping. Some whole bunches were incorporated in the ferment.
