2021 Days & Daze Freethinker, Shiraz, South Australia

(RRP $25.99)

A delicious Shiraz from South Australia which is made in a lighter style. Organic, vegan friendly and crafted with a low intervention approach, this wine is all about juicy shiraz fruit offering flavours of plum, blackcurrant and a lick of vanilla.

The soft tannins from the hands-off wine making make it a versatile wine that will go with spicier meat dishes. Drink now and over the next year or so.

2022 Ricca Terra Juicy June, Grenache Negroamaro, Riverland, Australia

(RRP $34.99)

Ricca Terra is owned by Ashley and Holly Ratcliff who purchased their first vineyard In 2003 with an aim to work with Mediterranean grape varieties best suited to the warm climate in Riverland, Australia.

Juicy June is a great example of what they are trying to achieve. It is made with Grenache and Negroamaro and is bottled in June right after harvest in an approach that is very similar to Beaujolais Nouveau. Expect fruit forward flavours and light juiciness - the perfect accompaniment to pizza and summer barbeque fare. Drink now!

2020 Casarena 505 Esencia, Malbec/Cabernet/Merlot, Mendoza, Argentina

(RRP $32.99)

Casarena  is located in the heart of Perdriel, just a short 20 minute drive from the city of Mendoza in the district of Luján de Cuyo. The company owns four vineyards with very different geographical profiles, and each vineyard was thoroughly explored in order to showcase different varieties. This wine is the coming together of those varieties

The grapes are carefully destemmed and go through a cold maceration lasting four days and fermentation is at low temperatures in order to obtain a higher aromatic punch. On the nose, the Malbec provides plum and red fruit aromas whilst the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah add spicy notes and the Merlot adds lush black fruits. The palate is firm and fruity with lovely tannins.

Drink now and over the next 3 years with proteinaceous meat dishes.

2021 McPherson's XV Pure, Cabernets, McLaren Vale,  Australia (RRP $18.99)

Andrew McPherson grew up in the world of wine and worked for some top names in Australian wine before setting up his own venture. His aim is to craft characterful, great value wines like this one.

This is a lavishly big, rich Cabernet blend from pristine vineyards growing on sandy loam soils situated near the free flowing Murray River. Rich, full bodied and vibrant, this is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Ruby Cabernet and offers  notes of spice and rich black fruits. Perfectly balanced, with a firm, smooth tannin structure, it finishes with lengthy ripe fruits and hints of French oak.  Delicious stuff that is drinking now and will age happily for another few years. Pair with meaty stews.

2020 Bodegas Luzón Verde, Monastrell, Jumilla, Spain (RRP $19.99)

Bodegas Luzón is one of the leading producers of quality wines in Jumilla which is  located in south eastern Spain on a high plateau surrounded by mountains. It enjoys a continental climate influenced by the Mediterranean Sea with warm days and cool nights which help the development of ripe flavours without sacrificing the oh so important balancing acidity.

Expect very intense aromas of red ripe fruit and florals on the nose, leading to a fruity and fresh palate that is sumptuous and smooth with sweet ripe tannins, balanced acidity and good persistence.

Drink now and over the next two years pairing with grilled meats and game dishes.

2019 Abbey Estate Obsession, Petit Verdot, Hawke’s Bay, NZ (RRP $17.99)

Petit Verdot’s home is found in Bordeaux where it is used as a “seasoning’ grape to add spice and colour to blends - but here it is the star of the show.

Petit Verdot can make intensely bold, fruity-yet-floral wines that can easily stand on their own, especially in slightly warmer and more consistent climates such as Hawke’s Bay. For the team at Abbey Estate it has become an obsession, and rightly so.

Expect deep red and black fruits, herbs, spice and a bit of grunt courtesy of the iron rich soils of Bridge Pa. Drink now and over the next two years with rich red  meat dishes.
