2021 McPherson's XV Pure, Cabernets, McLaren Vale,
Australia
(RRP $18.99)
Andrew McPherson grew up in the world of wine and worked for some top names in Australian wine before setting up his own venture. His aim is to craft characterful, great value wines like this one.
This is a lavishly big, rich Cabernet blend from pristine vineyards growing on sandy loam soils situated near the free flowing Murray River. Rich, full bodied and vibrant, this is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Ruby Cabernet and offers notes of spice and rich black fruits. Perfectly balanced, with a firm, smooth tannin structure, it finishes with lengthy ripe fruits and hints of French oak. Delicious stuff that is drinking now and will age happily for another few years. Pair with meaty stews.
2020 Bodegas Luzón Verde, Monastrell, Jumilla, Spain
(RRP $19.99)
Bodegas Luzón is one of the leading producers of quality wines in Jumilla which is located in south eastern Spain on a high plateau surrounded by mountains. It enjoys a continental climate influenced by the Mediterranean Sea with warm days and cool nights which help the development of ripe flavours without sacrificing the oh so important balancing acidity.
Expect very intense aromas of red ripe fruit and florals on the nose, leading to a fruity and fresh palate that is sumptuous and smooth with sweet ripe tannins, balanced acidity and good persistence. Drink now and over the next two years pairing with grilled meats and game dishes.
2019 Abbey Estate Obsession, Petit Verdot, Hawke’s Bay, NZ
(RRP $17.99)
Petit Verdot’s home is found in Bordeaux where it is used as a “seasoning’ grape to add spice and colour to blends - but here it is the star of the show.
Petit Verdot can make intensely bold, fruity-yet-floral wines that can easily stand on their own, especially in slightly warmer and more consistent climates such as Hawke’s Bay. For the team at Abbey Estate it has become an obsession, and rightly so.
Expect deep red and black fruits, herbs, spice and a bit of grunt courtesy of the iron rich soils of Bridge Pa. Drink now and over the next two years with rich red meat dishes.
Whites
2022 Neck Of The Woods, Pinot Gris, Central Otago, NZ
(RRP $24.99)
Neck Of The Woods makes authentic wines that harness the weird and wild of Central Otago, staying true to the land with minimal intervention winemaking. The leading winemaker is Jen Parr who has been making wine in the region since 2007, most famously at Valli winery.
Parcels of fruit were hand-picked from a 20 year old vineyard in Gibbston and whole bunches were loaded into the press and the juice gently extracted over a three hour cycle. A combination of stainless steel and neutral oak were used for fermentation and lees contact was encouraged in barrel.
The resulting wine is complexly layered with great ageing potential. Drink now and over the next 5 to 6 years with shellfish, salmon, chicken, pork and quiche.
2020 Kerpen Handpicked Riesling, Mosel, Germany
(RRP $22.99)
Wine making has been the Kerpen family business for 8 generations and almost 250 years. The winery is based in the Mosel, the world's biggest Riesling producing region, where steep slaty vineyards cascade into the Mosel River and the resulting wines are mineral and driven.
This is a gentle wine that is elegant and refreshing with lively acidity, restrained sweetness and zesty citrus flavours. Made with earlier harvested grapes with lower sugar levels, the ferment is stopped slightly early, leaving some natural residual sugar and a lower alcohol content. Drink now and over the next three years with seafood dishes and goat’s cheese.
2022 Zaria Rose Malbec, Hawkes Bay, NZ
(RRP $25.99)
This light pale pink rosé is reminiscent of the famous rosés of Provence such as those from Bandol.
Aromatics of bright red cherries, pomegranate and hibiscus flowers leap out of the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant offering a myriad of summer fruit flavours including red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberries. Drink now and over the next year or so with lighter mediterranean dishes.
